7 Signs of Gutter Damage on Your Home

damaged rain gutter

If you are like most people, your gutters are not something you often think about. They need biannual gutter cleaning, but besides that, their purpose is very simple.

It’s not until your rain gutters aren’t doing what they’re supposed to that you realize just how important they are for your home!

WHAT DO GUTTERS DO?

Gutters and downspouts go virtually unnoticed on most roofs in Iowa City. They blend into the exterior unless the homeowner chose copper or wood … materials that are designed to stand out! Most home exteriors are crafted from durable but lightweight aluminum or vinyl siding.

The purpose of rain gutters is to provide a path of minimal resistance for rain and snow to get off your roof. When they’re in good shape, your rain gutters will direct runoff away from the foundation and landscaping, protecting your home’s exterior from mold and mildew, the foundation and basement from leaking water, and the rain gutters themselves from wear and rust.

When they are damaged, it can lead to thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to your house and property.

ARE YOUR GUTTERS DAMAGED?

Gutter damage is too simple to fix to be the cause of any major home repairs! Keeping an eye on your gutters is easy and safe. If you notice any of the following signs, it’s a strong indication that your gutters have some kind of damage.

Once you identify a possible gutter problem, you can decide if it’s something you feel comfortable repairing or remedying by yourself or if it’s a project you should call a gutter service to handle.

Sitting Water Near Your Home

Sitting water near your home is a sure sign that your gutters or downspouts are not sending the water runoff away from your home the way they should be. Standing water can cause mold, weakening of your foundation, and creates the perfect habitat for pesky mosquitoes. And, it will make the areas around your house perpetually soggy and muddy.

Mold or Mildew

Mold or mildew is a bad sign, whether you see mold or mildew on the rain gutters or on the sides of your house. Mold and mildew indicate that there is too much moisture in that area – a potential problem with the gutters could be the cause. Keep in mind that mold and mildew are likely to grow on the north side of a house anyway, so if that’s where they’re appearing, it might be because that area gets very little direct sunlight on it. This is a situation when the advice and knowledge of a gutter specialist in Iowa City would be a great help.

Rain Pouring Over the Gutter

You’ll have to wait until it’s raining to find this type of gutter problem. Hopefully this doesn’t mean that you have gutter damage. It could just be that the gutter is clogged with debris and needs to be cleaned out. In either case, you need to have it looked at ASAP.

Basement Leaks

Based on the construction of your home’s basement, the leaking could be caused by any number of things. The standing water problem we discussed before could definitely cause a basement leak. Egress windows and cinder block walls can only block out so much water. That’s why it is necessary to keep your gutters in good condition!

Landscaping or Lawn Damage

Rain gutters empty directly onto the ground in most cases, and landscaping should be designed to work with this water flow to help it submerge into the ground. However, a leaking gutter or clogged gutter will allow rainfall to overflow or pool where it shouldn’t. This pooling rain water can destroy plants by force or by overwatering. It will also displace flower bed building materials like mulch or rock.

Water Marks

Water marks are a visible sign that there is a lot of moisture on a surface. Water marks are left behind even if pooling water has evaporated or dissipated. You will usually find water marks right beneath the rain gutters or behind the downspouts. This is a typically an indication that rain water is running down the outside of the gutters rather than staying inside of them.

Visible Gutter Damage

The last sign of gutter damage is by far the easiest to spot. If your gutters are bent, sagging or cracked, they definitely have damage. Following a storm, it’s a good idea to walk around your house to identify any possible damage to the roof shingles, outer walls, and rain gutters. These inspections are in addition to any routine home inspections.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR GUTTERS?

Here are some simple tips Iowa City Gutter Solutions recommends to prevent gutter damage:

Clean your gutters at least once a year. You can extend the time between gutter repairs by keeping them cleaned out. Like with anything else, the better you maintain your rain gutters, the less problems you’ll have with them.

The optimal time to clean gutters is in the spring, but to be cautious, give them a cleaning in the fall, too. Most homeowners clean their gutters on their own, but there are professional gutter cleaning companies that offer this service so you don’t have to deal with the work or the risk.

Inspect your gutters often. Signs of gutter damage can be visible from the outside of the gutters. A fast inspection – with both feet firmly on the ground – should reveal any of the signs we mentioned above.

We’d suggest that you complete an exterior home inspection at the end of each season to confirm that your gutters are functioning the right way.

When you see signs of gutter damage, act fast. Taking care of an issue before it becomes too bad can save you time and money. A small crack, for example, can be sealed, or the section of gutter with the crack can be replaced very affordably and quickly.

But, if you let the problem go on for too long, you could end up needing repairs in your basement, replacing expensive vinyl siding or redoing an entire area of landscaping.
